Music in the Schools: After-School Programs

Group string instruction for 3rd through 6th Graders from Academy, Green Street and Oak Grove Schools, and home schoolers.

Level 1:  Beginning Violin, viola, cello group Instruction for 3rd – 6th graders
Students will enjoy this unique opportunity to learn to play a string instrument with their friends.  Students will learn the basics of string instrument technique, reading music, and proper ensemble etiquette. Students will have the choice of violin, viola, or cello.

  • Held after-school on Thursdays until 4:00 pm at Academy School
  • Bus Service to Academy provided, but parental pickup required at 4:00.
  • Instruction provided free by the BMC and WSESU
  • Optional materials fee: $10
  • Instruments provided to those who need them. Local rentals also available.

 Level 2:  Group instruction for students, grades 4-6, who already have some experience playing a string instrument. This is the ideal next step for those who participated in the level 1 after school program last year,  and any others with some prior experience.  Students will strengthen basic technique and expand their music reading skills.  Students will also be encouraged to join the Tigers Ensemble or BMC Youth Orchestra to experience the challenges and fun of playing in an orchestra setting.

  • Held after-school on Tuesdays until 4:00 pm at Academy School
  • Bus Service to Academy provided, but parental pickup required at 4:00.
  • Instruction provided free by the BMC and WSESU
  • Instruments provided to those who need them. Local rentals also available.
  • Level 2 begins September 27th, 2025.  Students may join later with permission of instructor.

Home schoolers are welcome to participate in these, please contact the BMC office to sign up.
