Miriam Allbee

Voice

Miriam Albee is a BMC alum, having studied here with Lise Messier.  She then attended Westminster Choir College, earning a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance, followed by a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

She began teaching private voice lessons in 1990, with a focus on teaching high school students,  helping them prepare for district, state and regional competitions as well as auditions for musicals and university music programs. One of her early students (Chad Sloan) is, himself, now a working opera singer and university professor of voice himself.

In addition to her studio work, Miriam has directed school choirs and taught vocal music to junior high and high school students, and been a church Music Director.

She has performed the roles of Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, Mistress Quickly in Falstaff, Rosina in Il barbiere di siviglia, the Third Spirit in The Magic Flute, and Sister Jeanne in The Dialogues of the Carmelites.

Miriam’s musical goals are to keep singing healthfully and beautifully and to find opportunities for collaboration with other musicians. For her students, her goal is to help them to discover their natural voices (free of undue tension) and to learn the tools which make authentic artistic expression possible: an understanding of text, historical context, clear and precise diction, form, character and connected line.

Of her teaching approach Miriam says “I often focus on breath work and connected singing with novice students, sometimes using songs with which they can emotionally connect so that they can gain confidence in their vocal production prior to delving into some of the more standard literature.

When I first meet with a student I want to understand why s/he/they want(s) to pursue voice lessons, what their personal goals are and what their predominant learning style is. I find it’s important to develop a rapport/relationship with students and to earn their trust so that we can do the often vulnerable work of learning to sing.”
