Music in the Schools: After-School Programs

Playing with Strings – Group string instruction

Group string instruction for 3rd through 6th Graders from Academy, Green Street and Oak Grove Schools, and home schoolers.

Level 1:  Beginning Violin, viola, cello group Instruction for 3rd – 6th graders
Students will enjoy this unique opportunity to learn to play a string instrument with their friends.  Students will learn the basics of string instrument technique, reading music, and proper ensemble etiquette. Students will have the choice of violin, viola, or cello.

  • Held after-school on Thursdays until 4:00 pm at Academy School
  • Bus Service to Academy provided, but parental pickup required at 4:00.
  • Instruction provided free by the BMC and WSESU
  • Materials fee: $10
  • Instrument rental approximately $10-$15/month.   A limited number of loaner instruments available.
  • First session is September 29th, 2016

 Level 2:  Group instruction for students, grades 4-6, who already have some experience playing a string instrument. The ideal next step for those who participated in teh level 1 after school program last year,  and any others with some prior experience.  Students will strengthen basic technique and expand their music reading skills.  Students will also be encouraged to join the Tigers Ensemble or BMC Youth Orchestra to experience the challenges and fun of playing in an orchestra setting.

  • Held after-school on Tuesdays until 4:00 pm at Academy School
  • Bus Service to Academy provided, but parental pickup required at 4:00.
  • Instruction provided free by the BMC and WSESU
  • Materials fee: $10
  • Instrument rental approimately $10-$15/month.   A limited number of loaner instruments available.
  • First session is September 27th

  Home schoolers who would be students at one of the three Brattleboro Elementary Schools are welcome to participate in these

 

Children’s Chorus
Group vocal instruction for 3rd-6th graders from Academy, Green Street and Oak Grove Schools and home schoolers.

We are currently working on staffing for this porgram – stay tuned!

The most recent version of thisprogram was “Generation Pop” – with repertoire drawn from current and classic pop music. The class is always open to families and friends as an informal performance of what the students have been working on.  Students partipate in both the selection of repertoire and choreography of dance moves.

  • Held after-school at Green Street School
  • Bus Service to Green Street provided but end of class requires parental pickup
  • Instruction provided free by the BMC and WSESU
  • Music Materials: $10
  • Fall 2016 dates to be annnounced
