With Music Director Jonathan Harvey, the Brattleboro Concert Choir performs an exciting and challenging repertoire, ranging from classic choral masterpieces to rarely heard and newly commissioned works. The Choir’s far-ranging and adventurous programming involves innovative collaborations and presentations, and presents dynamic concerts to packed audiences twice yearly. Rehearsals for the first concert begin Wednesday, September 5th.

Brattleboro Concert Choir – The Fall and The Rise: Songs of Redemption
With this program, the Brattleboro Concert Choir explores a redemption story in two parts: Adam’s Lament by Arvo Pärt is “The Fall,” and Dreamweaver by Ola Gjeilo is “The Rise.” Estonian composer Arvo Pärt composed Adam’s Lament in 2009. The piece is a setting of a haunting Church Slavonic text by Russian Eastern Orthodox monk Saint Silouan. It is a stark exploration of the biblical Adam’s grief and pain at being cast out of Eden, and then seeing his son…

Brattleboro Concert Choir – The Birds Will Still Sing: Music of Perseverance
This program showcases four deeply personal and idiosyncratic musical expressions of the drive to strive, to overcome, and to persevere. The concert begins with two Baroque pieces - one by the too-little-known Italian composer Isabella Leonarda, and one by the very-well-known J.S. Bach. Leonarda’s continuo motet Alma redemptoris Mater, written before 1685, is a joyous and dance-filled setting of the traditional Catholic hymn of striving for Mary’s aid.
