CELTIC MUSIC SESSIONS
Instructors: Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy
Learn traditional jigs and reels, and other dance music of Scotland, Ireland and New England. All music will be taught by ear, making this class an excellent opportunity to both develop ear training abilities and get an introduction into these exciting musical traditions.
These weekly classes, were introduced at the BMC in the fall of 2007. The classes focus on developing ear training skills, specifically learning traditional celtic tunes by ear. It is also a repertoire building class and it is geared toward helping people feel comfortable playing in an informal group setting - the Irish “session” format.
The class is open to all instruments, though the emphasis is on learning melodies - guitar and piano players are expected to work through the melodies also, though some time is given to talking about chords. In general, the class does not address instrument-specific issues in depth (ie fiddle bowing, flute ornaments, guitar strums) though some of these things get touched on in passing.
Students do not require experience in playing by ear before coming to the class but students should have a reasonable technical proficiency on their instrument so that they can focus on the process of learning the melodies. If you are interested in the class but not sure if it is appropriate to your level, we are happy to have you sit in for one class to try it out.
INTRO TO TRADITIONAL MUSIC BY EAR
Instructor: Becky Tracy
This workshop is designed to help you improve your fiddle technique and to improve your ability to learn tunes by ear. It will be a class devoted mostly to fiddle players, though if you are willing to put up with moments of bowing discussion and you play another instrument, you will be welcome to join. We will work from the repertoire of the Celtic classes, so you will be able to join in the occasional tune at the local sessions. You must be able to play a handful of tunes to join this class.
YOUTH CELTIC CLASSES
Instructors: Lissa Schneckenburger (Level I), Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy (Level II)
Youth Celtic Classes, for ages 9-14, are open players of all instruments. Classes focus on developing repertoire in the Celtic tradition - mostly jigs, reels and waltzes and much of class time is spent on learning these melodies. All tunes are taught by ear. While experience in learning by ear (or Celtic music) is not critical, students should have a solid playing ability on their instruments so that they can focus on the process of learning by ear. We are happy to discuss the appropriateness of the class with interested players and are open to having kids come and try out the class.
Level 1 provides an introduction to both Celtic dance music and learning by ear. Students will learn jigs, reels, marches and polkas and develop the ability to learn without printed music. Note that while classes are open to all instruments most of class will be devoted to the learning of melodies, so guitar, piano and ukelele players etc should be prepared for this. Some time will also be given to going over chord progressions for the music. Students do not require experience in either playing by ear or Celtic music but they should be reasonably competent on their instruments: at a minimum they should be able to find specified notes on their instruments and know chord shapes if playing guitar, piano etc. It is an ideal class for students who do not yet have the repertoire or ear skill to join the more advanced Level II youth session.
